A MOCHA (WHEN COLD) OR ICED MOCHA (WHEN WARM) WITH KRYSTLE FROM MAYFRED JEWELS

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m one of those lifelong Canberrans. Growing up I used to think that I would move away and live someplace else, but I met my husband here, got married, had kids and bought our first house here. I love it here! I’m a stay at home mum to two young children and owner of MayFred Jewels making personalised crystal jewellery.

Tell us about Mayfred Jewels and how it came to be?

Growing up, I always wore jewellery gifted by my parents and relatives and hardly ever took them off. It was one of those things that was part of our family – jewellery was gifted as tokens, full of meaning and sentiment and always of quality. One of my aunts works in the industry as a jewellery buyer, and when I was at uni I worked as a sales professional at Michael Hill Jeweller, so my obsession was inevitable! In hindsight, I would have loved to train as a jeweller, so instead my business is a small way I can enjoy that dream. I started MayFred Jewels in late 2020 as I was looking for a creative endeavour that worked with being a stay at home mum. My collection focuses on three things that are hugely important to me:

1) jewellery that is meaningful and unique to the wearer

2) jewellery that is natural and of high quality that doesn’t flake or wear off

3) matching sets for mum and her kids.

I’ve combined my love of crystals and hand stamped metals, using only quality stones and working with sterling silver and gold filled (the latter being the next best and more affordable to real gold). My daughter is also my inspiration – she always wants to wear whatever I am, so I love making pieces that she will wear.

How can we support Mayfred Jewels?

I’m an online business so any support through liking, commenting and sharing on Instagram or Facebook is most welcome and appreciated! Hustling on social media is time and energy consuming, and I know fellow business owners feel me on this! You are also most welcome to message me with questions on crystals or metals I use, or to design custom pieces.

Any advice for those who are thinking about turning their dreams into a reality?

I’m just at the start of my business journey, so I’m learning a lot. I’ve taken the dive into something that I absolutely love, with the great support of my husband.

There’s a lot of research and upskilling, a lot of patience needed, a lot of unknowns and trial and errors. Ask for or invest in help. Learn from others. Whatever it is you want to do, there is enough space for everyone! The best thing is – I’ve found something that fits me, that IS me, and it is truly wonderful to do something out of passion.
