A TEA WITH NATALIA FROM THE DRESSMAKER’S DAUGHTER

What is your drink of choice?

I was raised in England so I am very partial to a good cup of tea! English Breakfast tea usually, but I’ll be happy with any tea.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Natalia, a 28-year-old Town Planner from England (but born in Poland). I moved to Australia almost 7 years ago and I became an Australian citizen 8 months ago. I’ve always been creative and my day job is about being creative with words rather than with my hands. I have two cats called Luna and Lucius and numerous plants my partner and I try to keep alive. I am a huge book worm, and always carry a book with me- in a handmade book sleeve (for its comfort and safety)!

Tell us about The Dressmaker’s Daughter and how it came to be?

The Dressmaker’s Daughter is a mother daughter team from Cooma and Canberra. The name came about as I realised you always see ‘xx and son’s’ companies but never ‘and daughters’ companies so The Dressmaker’s Daughter was born! It helps I’m the daughter of a dressmaker too. The business was started in the middle of the pandemic in 2020 as a creative outlet for both Anna, my mum-the dressmaker who works as a prison officer, and Me, the daughter who works as a town planner for Canberra Airport.

The business quickly pivoted to producing much needed face masks due to Covid-19 and now stocks a host of handmade accessories; including, pet bandanas, book sleeves, bags, aprons, rice heat packs and masks in eye catching fabrics and designs.

How can we support The Dressmaker’s Daughter?

I have an Etsy page, Instagram and Facebook Just search our name and find the pink needle and thread logo. Follow, Share, Like and Comment. The support I’ve had from local Canberrans has been phenomenal, especially when I was making face masks. Now we’ve calmed down and started making things that explore my creativity it’s been fun!

Any advice for those who are thinking about turning their dreams into a reality?

Just do it. My motto in life is ‘you get in life what you have the courage to ask for’ The worst that can happen is that you’re back to where you started- but at least you tried, and if it’s a success? then you’ve done it. Start small and do a lot of research that’ll put you in a good direction.
