Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m Loren – Director of Escola de Samba Canberra. Born and raised in Australia by Brazilian parents who migrated to Australia just before I was born. I’m now a mum myself to the cutest and cheekiest 1.5 year old boy who keeps me on my toes!

More than dance, Brazilian culture is a huge passion of mine. It gives me so much joy to be able to pass this passion onto my students through dance. Brazilian dance has a way of bringing out your confidence – something I love to see in my students. The energy in our classes is contagious!

When I’m not teaching (researching, training, choreographing, planning) – you’ll find me running after my active little man and doing all the mum things, working my 9-5, having a glass of wine with my hubby, or dancing some more at home!

Tell us about Escola de Samba and how it came to be?

Escola de Samba Canberra is a sister school of the renowned Escola de Samba Sydney. Born out of love for Brazilian culture and a deep passion to represent the art of Samba with integrity. So much more than what is seen on the surface of pretty costumes and feathers – the art of Samba is very culturally rich, with deep roots and there is so much to share beyond what we see! Escola de Samba Canberra was founded to bring authentic Brazilian dance education to Canberra.

Any advice for those who are thinking about turning their dreams into a reality?

Take the leap of faith! It may be uncomfortable at first and it’s not easy. But anything done with heart is contagious and energy speaks volumes! If you’re passionate about something – make it a reality. Start small and humble. You will quickly realize just how strong and capable you are.
